Naci\u00f3 el 5 de febrero de 1837 en Northfield, Massachusetts, Estados Unidos de Am\u00e9rica, su padre muri\u00f3 cuando \u00e9l ten\u00eda cuatro a\u00f1os, y a los diecisiete a\u00f1os se traslad\u00f3 a Boston para trabajar con su t\u00edo, qui\u00e9n le puso como condici\u00f3n, asistir a la iglesia donde \u00e9l concurr\u00eda. En 1855, se convirti\u00f3 al cristianismo cuando supo cuanto lo amaba Dios, despert\u00e1ndose en \u00e9l servir al Se\u00f1or como evangelista.
